House Rules

Below are the House Rules governing Resident’s living and participation in the Blue Water Retreat homes.

1. Zero Tolerance Policy Concerning Use of Drugs and Alcohol

While living at BWR, Resident is to always remain clean and sober, and shall refrain from the use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or prescription drugs for which you do not have a valid prescription. Drug paraphernalia and off-label use, dosing or administration of prescribed drugs constitutes a violation of this rule.

Any violation of this rule will result in immediate termination of Resident’s tenancy.

2. Drug and Alcohol Testing

Resident agrees that, at request of BWR, you shall be subject to drug testing, breathalyzer test and room search upon move-in and randomly thereafter. There is a 2-hour time limit to produce a urine sample. Resident agrees not to consume food with poppy seeds. Any violation of this rule will result in immediate termination of Resident’s tenancy.

3. Medications

All medications to be taken by the Resident (prescription and non-prescription), must be pre-approved by BWR staff. Any violation of this rule will result in immediate termination of Resident’s tenancy.

4. Curfew

Residents must abide by a 10pm curfew each night. Curfew may be extended to accommodate for work and volunteer schedules. All curfew extensions must be approved by a manager.

5. Chores

All residents will be tasked with daily and weekly chores by the House Manager. A weekly schedule will be available to all residents.

6. Common Living Area

The common area is for the enjoyment of all residents. Be courteous and respectful of your fellow residents by keeping conversations, television and music at a reasonable volume. Clean up after yourself and leave common areas as you have found them.

7. Bedrooms

Residents may only enter the bedroom they are assigned. Other residents' bedrooms are completely off-limits at all times. Management has the right to enter bedrooms and conduct random searches to ensure a sober living environment for all residents.

8. Bathrooms

Residents are sharing bathrooms and are expected to use a reasonable amount of time when using the bathrooms, especially in the mornings and evenings. Bathrooms are available on a come-first basis. Residents are responsible for their personal toiletries. If a resident requires the use of a bathroom at a certain time (to get ready for work or other events), it is the resident’s responsibility to communicate with other residents to ensure availability. Be courteous and accommodate each other.

Each resident is expected to leave the bathrooms clean and ready for the next resident to use.

9. Kitchen Area

The kitchen area is considered a common area and is shared by all residents. Residents are responsible to clean up after using the kitchen. Residents are responsible for labeling their food. Other residents' food items are off-limits. Expired food items or leftovers, moldy or otherwise unsanitary items will be removed at management discretion.

10. Outdoor Area

Blue Water Retreat residents have the right to use the backyard and porch areas for their enjoyment. Smoking is allowed in the outdoor areas as long as it does not provide a nuisance to neighbors. Loitering on the sidewalk and street are not permitted. Noise is to be kept at a reasonable level. All neighbors must be treated with the utmost respect. No outdoor activities are permitted after 10pm.

11. Group Activities

Residents are expected to participate in all group activities, including but not limited to:

  • Weekly House Meeting, each Sunday at 3pm

  • Life-skill training and sessions

12. Work, School and Volunteer Requirements

Residents must at a minimum meet one of the following criteria within 30 days of residency:

  1. Secure Employment of at least 25 hours per week, with a maximum of 50 hours per week.

  2. Be a full-time student.

  3. Secure Volunteer work of at least 20 hours per week

13. Visitors

All visitors must be approved by a manager and are restricted to the common area of the house. Children (minors) should not be visiting residents; this is not the environment for that. Please be respectful of other residents’ privacy.

14. Expected Behavior

Always treat your fellow residents, neighbors and community members with respect, dignity and kindness. Every resident’s sobriety path is different and Blue Water Retreat is a place of understanding, learning, respect and growth. All residents and managers are here to support each other.

15. Grievances and Conflict Resolution

Should residents encounter problems or should a conflict among residents arise, it must be brought to a manager’s attention immediately. Management will mediate between residents to find a resolution. Management solutions are final and non-negotiable. Disregard of management resolutions will result in immediate termination of Resident’s tenancy.

16. Disruptive Behavior, Threats and Violence

Violent behavior or threats are not tolerated.

Disruptive Behavior includes, and is not limited to, the following:

  • Physical or verbal abuse/violence

  • Destruction of property

  • Threats towards any person, including but not limited to residents, management, visitors and neighbors

  • Disrespect to other house members

  • Lying or dishonesty

  • Theft

Any violation of this rule will result in immediate termination of Resident’s tenancy.

17. Weapons and Firearms

No firearms, firearm accessories, or weapons of any kind are allowed on premises. Any violation of this rule will result in immediate termination of Resident’s tenancy.

18. Illegal Activities and Behavior

Residents are prohibited from breaking laws both inside the residence and outside, in the community at large. Residents will be held legally and financially responsible for damage to persons and property. This qualifies both inside the property, and outside in the community. Any violation of this rule will result in immediate termination of Resident’s tenancy.

19. Written Warnings

Breaking of House Rules will result in a written warning. Residents are not to accrue more than two written warnings during their residency. The third violation will result in termination of the Tenant’s residency.

20. Management Discretion

Management reserves the right to add or update rules at its sole discretion. Changes, updates and additions to rules will be communicated to all residents both verbally and in writing. Management rulings, interpretations and direction must be respected and followed as it arises.
